Kayak Trip – 15-Sep.07 Caballo Lake

The water level at Caballo was down by about 25ft. from the three weeks ago. While on the south end of the lake three weeks ago I saw the Juvenile Pelican. This week on the North end of the lake I saw two adult Pelicans. I approached them and they were unbothered at 30 yards. I also saw my first flock of Snow Geese for the year and group of seven Turkey Vultures hanging out on the shore. The Grebe’s were out in full force feasting on the concentrated fish due to the low lake levels.

I used the GPS (Garmin E-Trex Vista) for the first time on the lake. Top speed was 5.4 mph. Overall Distance was 5.8 miles. Average speed was 2.3 mph. I like the GPS so much I will now add a mount to the Kayak.

I definitely need to get it together on the pictures. So many nice views that I could share here.

Any time I see a group of Vultures I feel better; it’s a sign of good luck! A solitary swift was making little headway against strong southwesterly wind on Friday, remaining almost motionless above the road as I approached. I felt the same way, having just finished a trip to Vons for paper towels and milk. It was hoping to make its way south; I’m hoping cellulose and its derivatives doesn’t bankrupt me.
