- Click to see full-size image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on April 4 that it had expanded its ground operations in the northern Gaza Strip, with troops advancing into Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood. The operations are aimed at expanding Israel’s buffer zone along the Gaza border, the military said in a statement, noting that Israeli troops had killed several terror operatives and destroyed infrastructure, including a command center of the Hamas Movement. The military, which issued an evacuation order for Shejaiya a day earlier, also claimed that it was enabling Palestinian civilians to leave the area “for their safety.” Click to see full-size image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) Click to see full-size image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) Earlier in the day, the Hamas-run health ministry in the Strip reported that dozens were killed in Israeli strikes over the previous 24 hours, including 27 people who died when three missiles hit a former school building in the al-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City. One of the recent strikes on northern Gaza killed a senior commander of Hamas elite Nukhba force, according to the IDF. The strike was directed by troops of the 401st Armored Brigade. The brigade killed several more fighters and destroyed rocket launchers and other Hamas infrastructure during their operations, the military said. More than 1,200 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been reportedly killed since the IDF renewed its operations on Gaza on March 18, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that was brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar last January. In addition, the humanitarian office of the United Nations said that around 280,000 Palestinians have been displaced within the Strip. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the IDF would carve out a new security corridor to cut off the area of Rafah, which lays along Gaza’s border with Egypt, in order to mount more pressure on Hamas, which continues to hold 59 Israeli hostages. IDF spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin later said that the military has begun a “new stage” in the operation designed to return the hostages and destroy “Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.” “In recent days, we have advanced to a new stage in the operation,” the spokesman told reporters during a briefing on April 3. “The plan serves the goals of the war: returning the hostages and destroying Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.” According to Defrin, the newly expanded campaign had involved more than 60 strikes aimed at degrading Hamas’s capabilities and paving the way for ground troops to move into areas in the north and south of the Strip. “We have broadened our activities in southern Gaza to surround and cut off the Rafah area,” he added. “Beyond that, we’re maintaining operational ambiguity so we can surprise the enemy and bring about significant achievements.” The spokesman also revealed that Israel has struck more than 600 targets in Gaza and killed over 250 so-called “terror operatives,” including 12 senior officials in Hamas’s military wing and political bureau, since renewing its operations in the Strip. “They are all terrorists and participated in the October 7 massacre,” he said of the senior officials. The IDF has been facing little to no resistance from Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions while advancing in the Strip. On April 3, a rocket was fired at Israel from central Gaza, setting off sirens in the nearby settlement of Nahal Oz. The IDF later said that the rocket was intercepted by its air defenses. No casualties or material losses were reported by Hebrew media. The al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, later claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. It also released footage showing two quadcopter drones which were recently downed and captured by its fighters in northern Gaza. Israel’s decision to further expand its ground operations in Gaza will further complicate ongoing efforts to return to the ceasefire. Even more escalation is to be expected in coming days, as the IDF has taken no losses since renewing its operations in the Strip. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - — US Aims To Bolster Its Arctic Presence To Control Polar Vast Resources
- Click to see the full-size image The Arctic’s transformation into a geopolitical chessboard reflects the US/NATO Cold War reflexes, ill-suited to an emerging multipolar world. Written by Uriel Araujo, PhD, anthropology researcher with a focus on international and ethnic conflicts As the world fixates on the battlefields of Ukraine and the volatile Middle East, a quieter but no less consequential struggle is unfolding in the Arctic. Washington’s latest maneuver—planning to acquire icebreakers from Finland amid what some call an “Arctic crisis”—signals a bold escalation in the polar region in the context of competition with Beijing and Moscow. This move, paired with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s recent trip to Greenland, and President Donald Trump’s proposed energy sanctions targeting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansion (if he doesn’t change his mind), reveals a troubling pattern: once again, this has everything to do with the US-led NATO’s relentless push to encircle Russia, even at the risk of igniting a new geopolitical flashpoint (even if Trump seems to be “turning his back” to the Alliance). The Arctic, far from being a frozen backwater, is poised to become the next major arena of U.S.-Russian contention—a development that exposes Trump’s America imperial ambitions and undermines claims of “isolationism” or of fostering peace and stability for that matter. Ironically, we now have an American president openly threatening (with annexation) the sovereignty of NATO European “ally”, Denmark, over the issue of Greenland. The icebreaker deal with Finland is no mere logistical upgrade. Trump has framed it as a critical step “amid Arctic security concerns,” with Washington aiming to bolster its polar presence against Russia’s formidable fleet of over 36 icebreakers. One should pay attention also to the trilateral ICE Pact with Canada and Finland; expert Daniel McVicar (Research Director at White House Writers Group), predicts Trump will expand it to counter “Russian influence.” Meanwhile, the Danish Prime Minister’s visit to Greenland, underscores Washington’s broader strategy to secure strategic footholds in the region. Greenland, a Danish territory, has long been a target of Trump’s fixation—he recently reiterated his desire to “get Greenland,” —a notion Russian President Vladimir Putin has called a “serious” U.S. intent. These moves are not about defense; they are about dominance. Trump’s proposed energy sanctions, exceeding the scope of the 2019 measures, aim to choke Russia’s LNG ambitions, which are deeply tied to the Arctic. Russia’s Northern Sea Route, a thawing shipping lane along its Arctic coast, promises to redirect energy exports to Asia, circumventing Western chokeholds like the Suez Canal. By targeting this lifeline, the U.S. seeks to kneecap Moscow’s economic resilience—a tactic less about security and more about maintaining American hegemony. The region’s vast untapped resources, from oil and gas to rare earth minerals, only heighten the stakes. One may recall that the U.S. (then still under President Joe Biden, mind you) has already claimed a “huge portion of the ocean floor” from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic, a unilateral grab that flouts international norms and highlights the American expansionist ethos. Increasingly warm temperatures in the Arctic region, which facilitate navigation, present a significant opportunity for the liquefied natural gas industry, among other benefits, hence the strategic importance of that area. Additionally (and relatedly), still during Bidens administration, tensions have escalated in the Gulf of Finland. It’s worth noting that NATO’s further expansion under Biden, incorporating Sweden and Finland, has extended the Alliance’s territory all the way to Russia’s eastern Arctic flank (the Bering Strait), thus leaving Russia as the sole non-NATO country in the Arctic. This is the context for Trump’s Greenland and Arctic “obsession”. NATO’s cheerleaders might argue that all of this is a necessary response to Russian “aggression.” After all, they claim, Moscow has militarized its Arctic frontier, with nuclear-powered icebreakers and new combat vessels like the Ivan Papanin. But this narrative conveniently ignores NATO’s own history of provocations. The alliance’s eastward creep—absorbing Finland and Sweden—has turned the Gulf of Finland into a potential “site of new conflict,” as I’ve written before. Finland’s integration into the ICE Pact and its icebreaker expertise, means that the Nordic country, once a neutral asset, now serves NATO’s agenda—even when the incumbent American President is accused of “abandoning” the transatlantic alliance. This shift has strained Arctic cooperation, with Russia excluded from regional forums like the Arctic Council since 2022. Far from stabilizing the region, the United States actions are fracturing it. The Greenland obsession epitomizes this overreach. Trump’s fixation, dismissed as eccentric in 2019, now aligns with a calculated NATO strategy, even while Trumps go as far as to threaten a member ally such as the Kingdom of Denmark. One may very well describe it as “part of a scramble for the Arctic,” (as Al-Jazeera called it) given Greenland’s strategic position astride key shipping routes and its mineral wealth. document.createElement('video'); https://s5.cdnstatic.space/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/IMG_0966.mp4Download video Denmark is ramping up its Arctic defenses, yet its sovereignty over Greenland is increasingly a bargaining chip in Washington’s game. Putin’sremarks at an Arctic conference underscore Moscow’s alarm: the U.S. isn’t just eyeing territory—it’s projecting power into Russia’s backyard. This isn’t deterrence; it’s encirclement. One must ask: who benefits from this Arctic gambit? Certainly not the global commons. The ICE Pact and sanctions risk escalating tensions in a region where cooperation—on climate, shipping, and resource management—once held promise. Even from an American perspective, Russia’s exclusion from Arctic dialogue pushes Moscow toward China (the exact opposite of what Trump supposedly is trying to achieve by means of a so-called “reverse Kissinger” strategy), in a context of a New Cold War, thereby forming a counter bloc that could destabilize the polar balance further. China’s “Polar Silk Road” ambitions, paired with Russia’s icebreaking prowess, challenge NATO’s aggressive dominance, yet the alliance’s response—more militarization, more sanctions—only deepens the divide. https://s5.cdnstatic.space/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/IMG_4848.mp4Download video The US presidential administration has released a promotional video about solidarity with Greenland and the confrontation between Russia and China on the Arctic continent The Arctic should not be NATO’s next frontier. Its transformation into a geopolitical chessboard reflects the alliance’s Cold War reflexes, ill-suited to an emerging multipolar world. Trump’s icebreaker push and energy sanctions may bolster U.S. leverage, but they also invite retaliation—perhaps in the Gulf of Finland, or through Russia’s LNG pivot to Asia. To recap, the U.S. claims vast swathes of seabed, NATO tightens its grip on Greenland, and Finland’s shipyards churn out tools of confrontation. This isn’t security—it’s a recipe for conflict. A saner approach would prioritize de-escalation: reintegrating Russia into Arctic forums, negotiating resource-sharing pacts, and curbing NATO’s northward sprawl. The Arctic’s future hinges on cooperation, not conquest. Yet as Washington doubles down, dragging its allies along, the ice grows thinner—both literally and figuratively. In fact, the next U.S.-Russian clash may erupt not in Ukraine or Syria, but rather in the frozen north, where NATO’s hubris could spark a fire no icebreaker can extinguish. - — Israel Launches More Strikes Against Syria In Challenge To Turkey (Photos)
- Illustrative image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) Another wave of Israeli strikes targeted military sites close to the Syrian capital, Damascus, late on April 3, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The London-based monitoring group said that the strikes hit the 1st Division base close to the town of al-Kiswah, some 15 kilometers to the south of Damascus, and the 75th Brigade base in the nearby town of al-Mokaylebah. No casualties were reported. The two bases included multiple ammunition depots. Several air defense and radar systems are also known to be deployed there. Click to see full-size image. Click to see full-size image. A day earlier, a violent series of strikes hit what the Israeli military described as “remaining military capabilities” at the Hama military airport in the western Hama countryside, the T-4 Air Base in the eastern Homs countryside and a research facility close to Damascus. At least four were killed in the strikes, allegedly including three Turkish engineers. Israeli troops also clashed with local fighters while advancing in the western countryside of Daraa, killing at least nine of them. While Israel stepped up its operations against Syria after the fall of the Assad regime, the latest deadly attack represented a serious escalation. The attack came following Arab media reports revealing a daring plan by Turkey to deploy air defenses and combat drones at air bases in central Syria, including the T4. Thus, the attack was seen by most observers as a direct warning to Turkey. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Syria’s new ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa after the attack that he would “pay a heavy price” if he allowed forces hostile to Israel into Syria. “Israel will not allow Syria to become a threat to its communities and security interests,” Katz said, speaking to Defense Ministry employees at a ceremony ahead of Passover, and adding that troops would continue to maintain a presence in the buffer zone and act against threats. “The air force’s activities yesterday at the T-4 airbase, in Hama and the Damascus area, are a clear message and warning for the future — we won’t allow harm to the security of the State of Israel.” Later, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Ankara of playing a “negative role” in Syria, saying that “they are doing their utmost to have Syria as a Turkish protectorate. It’s clear that is their intention.” Responding, Turkey demanded Israel withdraw from Syria and said that it must stop harming stabilization efforts in the war-torn country. “Israel has become the greatest threat to regional security” and is a “strategic destabilizer, causing chaos and feeding terrorism,” the foreign ministry in Ankara said. “Therefore, in order to establish security throughout the region, Israel must first abandon its expansionist policies, withdraw from the territories it occupies, and stop undermining efforts to establish stability in Syria,” it added. Israel, which clearly has the upper hand, will likely escalate even further in the near future. While Israel has so far justified its strikes on Syria by claiming to target weapons and facilities left behind by the Assad regime, it could soon adopt a new narrative justifying direct attacks on the forces of the Islamist-led interim government. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - — Ukrainian Military Launched Record Six Attacks On Russian Energy Facilities
- Illustrative Image The Kiev regime continues to ignore the agreement on suspension of strikes on energy infrastructure. Over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian military has carried out six attacks on Russian energy infrastructure facilities. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that on the evening of April 3, Ukrainian kamikaze UAV struck a low-pressure gas pipeline in the village of Belaya Berezka, Trubchevsky district in the Bryansk region. As a result of the pipeline was damaged and gas supply to local residents was stopped. At about midnight, another Ukrainian UAV attacked the internal low-pressure gas pipeline of the Municipal Unitary Enterprise Zhilkomservice Trubchevsk in the village of Belaya Berezka in the Trubchevsky district of the Bryansk region. The pipeline was damaged, as a result of which gas supply to the local residents was stopped. On the morning of April 4, Ukrainian UAV damaged the overhead low-pressure steel gas distribution pipeline of Gazprom Gas Distribution Tambov JSC in Kotovsk in the Tambov region. In about two hours, the Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled the power facility of the branch of Rosseti Center – Bryanskenergo in the Bryansk region. As a result of the sheling, residents of the Klimovsky district were left without electricity. A little latter, the second wave of Ukrainian shelling broke the wires of a high-voltage line at the power facility of the branch of Rosseti Center – Bryanskenergo in the same Bryansk region. As a result, dozens of household consumers in the Klimovsky district were left without electricity. Another Ukrainian UAV attacked a power facilityof the branch of PJSC ROSSETI Center –Lipetsk in Novonikolayevka in the Lipetsk region. As a result of the attack, the power supply to household consumers in the Lipetsk region was interrupted. Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities continue daily. The Russian military concluded that for more than two weeks now, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have continued to unilaterally attack the Russian energy infrastructure, without paying any attention to Zelenskys publicly accepted commitments to stop such attacks from March 18. - — Kiev’s Diplomacy Is As Weak As Its Army
- Illustrative Image Zelensky is trying to play diplomacy, while his army cannot stop losing the war. The head of the Kiev regime tried to draw the red lines that Kiev does not agree to cross. Zelensky refuses to reduce the number of Ukrainian troops, which is now three times higher than it was before the hostilities began. Moreover, Kiev plans to enlarge its army, increasing number of the troops and launching their technical modernization after the end of the war. The second unacceptable concession for Zelensky is the official recognition of the loss of the territories that came under Russian control. Kiev believes that it allegedly can gain the lost regions back through diplomatic means. However, Kiev’s diplomacy is as weak as its army. On the night of April 4th, Russian air defense repelled another massive attack of Ukrainian UAVs. In total, 107 Ukrainian drones were destroyed, including one of them in the Moscow region. As usual, Ukrainian attack resulted in no damage to any military facilities, but Ukrainian drones continue wounding and killing civilians. In their turn, Russian forces do not stop devastating precision strikes on Ukrainian rear infrastructure. Last night, Russian drones pounded Ukrainian command posts, warehouses, logistics hubs and other military facilities in the Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhie regions. The city of Kharkiv came under another devastating attack. As a result, the 218th separate military logistics center was destroyed, and the local Military Institute of Tank Troops was heavily damaged. The enterprise specialized on production of explosives was attacked in Kremenoe in the Zaporozhie region. Military hideouts came under precision strikes in Brovary on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital. One of the main targets of Russian strikes was the international airfield in the city of Dnipro, which was used by the Ukrainian military. According to local reports, a large hangar and six civilian aircraft were destroyed as a result of the attack. Dominating in the air, the Russian military maintains the initiative on the ground. The Russian troops re repelling the last Ukrainian forces from the border areas in Guevo and Oleshnya. According to preliminary reports the village of Basovka located in the Sumy region came under Russian control. As a result, Ukrainian forces retreating from the Kursk region are suffering more losses. Ukrainian attacks in the border Belgorod region brought no results. Clashes continues in the forests near the border. The Ukrainian military failed to gain control of the villages of Demidovka, Popovka. The Russian army is rapidly advancing in the Southern Donetsk direction. After their victories in Razliv and Constantinople, the Russian troops advanced on a wide front, approaching the villages of Bogatyr and Alekseevka. On the Zaporizhia front, the Russian Armed Forces increased the intensity of hostilities in the areas of Lobkovo and Shcherbaky, expanding the control zone. The activation of the Kamensky front is becoming a new element of the situation. Paratroopers and motorized infantry are pushing through Ukrainian defense, trying to knock the enemy out across the water barrier. - — Israel Assassinated Senior Hamas Commander In Lebanon (Photos, Videos)
- Click to see full-size image. Israel assassinated a senior commander of the Palestinian Hamas Movement in the coastal Lebanese city of Sidon early on April 4. Lebanese media reported that a strike hit an apartment in Sidon where the commander, Hassan Farhat. At least two other people were killed alongside him. Footage from the scene of the strike showed the targeted apartment in flames, with smoke pouring out of it. The other floors of the building appear to be relatively unscathed. Farhat headed Hamas’s forces in the western sector of Lebanon, according to a statement released later by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). During the war, the military said, Farhat advanced numerous attacks on Israeli civilians and troops, and was responsible for a rocket attack on the Northern Command base in Safed on February 14 of last year that killed Staff Sergeant Omer Sarah Benjo and wounded other troops. “The terrorist was involved in advancing terror attacks against the State of Israel in recent months, and his activities constituted a threat to the State of Israel and its citizens,” the military said. Overnight, other Israeli strikes hit the areas of Naqoura, Nabatieh and Wadi Azza in southern Lebanon. However, no casualties were reported there. Click to see full-size image. Hamas is a close ally to Hezbollah. The Lebanese group was the first to come to Hamas aid after the October 7 surprise attack of 2023. It began conducting operations against the IDF from Lebanon in support of the Gaza Strip just a day after the attack. After taking heavy losses, the group agreed to a ceasefire. The ceasefire, which was brokered by the United States last November, was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the IDF continues to launch strikes against Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah and its allies. It also continues to deploy troops at five strategic posts in the south of the country. In February, an IDF strike killed senior Hamas commander Mohammad Shahin in Sidon. Israel accused him of plotting and advancing terror attacks from Lebanon against Israeli civilians, with Iranian funding and guidance. Another strike that targeted the capital, Beirut on April 1, claimed the life of Hassan Bdair, a senior intelligence commander of Hezbollah. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned in a recent speech that if Israel continues to carry out strikes in Lebanon, and the Lebanese government does not act to stop it, then the group will take matters into its own hands. However, the group and its allies are yet to take action. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - — Seeking Rapprochement, Hezbollah Condemns Deadly Israeli Strikes On Syria
- File image. Hezbollah on April 3 condemned what it called a United States-Israeli barbaric aggression against Syria, Yemen, the Gaza Strip, and Lebanon. In a statement, the group said that recent attacks on the countries were a part of a broader open war waged by the American-Zionist axis of evil against the regions people, destabilizing countries, violating their sovereignty, and depleting their resources in an attempt to impose U.S. hegemony and serve Israeli interests. Hezbollah also emphasized that Israel’s repeated strikes and incursions in Syria were aimed at weakening the Syrian state and preventing its recovery, calling it a flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty. The group went on to commended the resilience of the Syrian people, citing the recent Israeli incursion, which resulted in casualties, as proof of Syrias continued dedication to resisting occupation. Overnight, an intense wave of Israeli strikes hit military sites near the Syrian capital, Damascus, as well as in the central governorates of Hama and Homs, including two air bases and a research facility, killing at least four people. Clashes also broke out in the southern governorate of Daraa when locals took up arms to stop an Israeli incursion. At least nine were killed there. Hezbollah in the same statement denounced the persistent U.S. aggression and the humanitarian atrocities committed against the Yemeni people. The group said that these actions were aimed at pressuring Yemen to abandon its support for Gaza. Hezbollah also condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestine, particularly Gaza, noting the continued genocide and displacement efforts happening under the eyes of the international community. “The continued genocide and forced displacement, carried out under the watchful eyes of an indifferent international community, demonstrate the enemy’s failure to break the will of the Palestinian resistance and the unyielding spirit of its people,” the statement reads. In Lebanon, Hezbollah pointed to repeated Israeli attacks and ongoing U.S. pressure, which it said seeks to provide cover for Israeli crimes and impose its conditions through envoys acting on behalf of the Zionist entity. Hezbollah warned that this dangerous escalation places the entire region at a critical juncture, necessitating unity among its nations to counter these existential threats. “The equation is clear: either confrontation or submission to the enemy’s schemes, which seek nothing less than to subjugate the region and dominate its people and resources,” the statement declared. The group reaffirmed its full solidarity with Syria, Yemen, and the Gaza Strip, urging all free nations to raise their voices against these crimes. Hezbollah took heavy losses in the last confrontation with Israel, which broke out as a result of the war on Gaza. Since a ceasefire brokered by the U.S. came into effect in Lebanon last November, the group has largely refrained from responding to Israel. In December, the group took another large blow when its close ally Syrian president Bashar al-Assad fled his country following a large-scale offensive by rebels. The group’s main supply lines were effectively cut with the collapse of the regime in Syria. Hezbollah backed Assad against the rebels, including the Islamist group of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) which led the final offensive, since the outbreak of the war in Syria. Nevertheless, since the fall of the regime, the group has stated its support for the emerging Islamist-led government in Syria. Even when a government crackdown claimed the lives of more than 1,600 civilians, mostly members of the Shiite Alawite religious minority, last March Hezbollah didn’t intervene and voiced its respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. While the recent statement addressed escalation all over the Middle East, it was, without a doubt, especially directed towards Syria. Hezbollah apparently sees the recent Israeli escalation against the country as a chance for rapprochement that could possibly reopen its supply routes. Meanwhile, the Islamists ruling Syria, who are mainly made up from the ranks of the now dissolved HTS, have repeatedly slammed Hezbollah, even going as far as accusing the group of attacking government troops on the border with Lebanon earlier this year. While Syria’s new rulers initially hoped that their tough stance against Hezbollah and Iran would grant them serious political, economic and military support from Gulf states and the West, none of these hopes have materialized yet. Even Turkey’s ability and willingness to support the new government in Syria was put in question by Israel’s recent attacks on the country, which were meant to deter Ankara. If Israel continues to escalate against Syria, the government will have either to compromise to the point of weakening its own Islamist structure, or it could make a shift towards Hezbollah and Iran. After all, both sides share a Islam-based ideology, and the Sunni Hamas Movement, among the first to support the uprising in Syria, is one of the key allies of Hezbollah. Hezbollah, Iran and the rest of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” could provide the Syrian government with substantial support, especially militarily. Such an alliance could pose an even larger threat to Israel than the one that existed before the fall of the Assad regime. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. New conflicts are emerging in Syria, with a rise in internal sectarian tensions, a new wave of American expansion and Israel taking action to counter Turkey’s growing influence in the war-torn country. The instability of the country became evident early in March, when a government crackdown on so-called “remnants” of the Assad regime in western Syria claimed the lives of more than 1,600 civilians, mostly members of the Alawite minority. Amid the killings, some 10,000 civilians took refuge at Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base close to the city of Jableh. On March 25, reports revealed that Russian forces expanded their control around Khmeimim, entering at least three nearby towns, Qubaisiya, Bakhdarmo, and Khirbet al-Ashar, to secure the base and the civilians taking refuge there. Later on March 27, a series of strikes hit the Minet el-Beida military port and the adjacent 110th Brigade base on the coast. The strikes were blamed on Israel, but the country didn’t take responsibility. More escalation was reported in western Syria between March 28 and 31 with Russian air defenses intercepting several mysterious drones over Khmeimim and the naval base in Tartus port. Separately, recent reports revealed attempts by the United States to expand its influence to the outskirts of the capital, Damascus, in southern Syria On March 30, fighters from the U.S.-Backed Syrian Free Army (SFA) were spotted in the town of al-Dumayr, which is located some 35 kilometers to the northeast of Damascus. Later on March 31, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a U.S. force combined by fighters from the SFA and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces had taken control of the nearby Al-Dumayr Air Base. Meanwhile, Israel appears to be on the course for a heated confrontation with Turkey over Syria. On April 1, the Middle East Eye revealed Turkish plans to deploy air defenses and combat drones at the T4 Air Base and the nearby Palmyra military airport in central Syria, which were both attacked by Israel twice during March. The Israeli response came over the night of April 2 and 3 with a wave of strikes targeting the T4 in addition to Hama military airport and a military research facility near Damascus. At least four, allegedly including three Turkish engineers, were killed in the strikes. Amid the strikes Israeli troops also clashed with local fighters near the towns of Nawa and Tasil in southern Syria. Nine fighters were killed in the confrontation. All in all, it is clear that the war in Syria didn’t end with the fall of the Assad regime. The new phase of the war will be marked by more apparent foreign interventions, notably by Israel and Turkey. It will be very difficult for the country’s Islamist-led interim government to navigate these emerging conflicts without getting involved. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - Click to see the full-size image Situation in the sky On the night of April 3, Russian air defense forces destroyed 23 Ukrainian drones over the Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Kaluga, Smolensk, and Belgorod regions. Click to see the full-size image Throughout the day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) launched four attacks on Russian energy facilities: in Luhansk, a drone strike damaged the Svatovo gas-distributing station, leaving over 11,000 consumers without gas; in the Kursk Region, a drone damaged the 110 kV Seimskaya–Klyukva №1 power line, cutting off electricity to more than 1,200 residents; in the Belgorod Region, Ukrainian artillery disabled a transformer at the Maksimovka power substation, leaving over 1,700 residents without electricity; in the Zaporizhzhia Region, a drone attack damaged the Vasilyevka electrical substation, causing around 9,000 people to lose electricity. In response, Russian Armed Forces (RAF) targeted Ukraine using 39 Geran attack drones and various decoy drones, striking northern and eastern regions. Over 14 Geran UAVs were launched at Kharkiv in a swift attack, with explosions also reported in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, and Sloviansk. These strikes aimed to weaken Ukrainian military infrastructure and defense capabilities. Situation on the fronts In the Kursk direction (Russia), the evacuation of civilians from liberated territories continues. Five people have been taken to safe areas over the past 24 hours. It is reported that in the south of the Sudzha district, the Ukrainian military are trying to use the territory of the St. Nicholas Belogorsk Monastery to organize defenses. This area, near Guevо and Gornal, holds strategic importance, as its loss would significantly complicate Ukrainian efforts to defend the adjacent Sumy Region. In the Belgorod direction (Russia), fighting continued in Demidovka and Popovka. The transfer of Ukrainian reinforcements was disrupted, leaving the remaining Ukrainian units in a dire situation. document.createElement('video'); https://s5.cdnstatic.space/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Belgorod.mp4Download video Russian strike with an ODAB-1500 guided volumetric detonation bomb on a dam near Popovka, used by the UAF to transfer armored vehicles into the Belgorod Region In the Sumy direction, Ukrainian troops once again launched an unsuccessful counterattack near Veselovka. On the political front, the US President Donald Trumps administration has finally admitted that it is unlikely to reach a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine before Easter (April 20). The lack of progress in peace negotiations is a political blow for Trump, given his pre-election promises. The White House reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth will miss the Ramstein format meeting on providing military aid to Ukraine, failing to join even by video call. Recent Ukrainian drone attacks on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium infrastructure caused significant damage to American companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil, increasing frustration in the White House. Analysts note that Kiev is aiming to demonstrate its independence and strengthen its negotiating position with the West by targeting U.S. interests. These developments raise questions about further support for Ukraine. - russian 2S43 Malva self-propelled artillery gun. Open source photo. The Russian military recently received another batch of advanced 2S43 Malva self-propelled howitzers, a photo that surfaced online on April 3 revealed. The photo shows a train loaded with at least eight Malvas in an unidentified part of Russia, possibly heading towards the special military operation zone. It was reportedly taken sometime last February and published only now for security reasons. Click to see full-size image. Via Telegram. The Malva is based on the BAZ-6010-027 8×8 special wheeled chassis. The howitzer is armed with a 152 mm 2A64 cannon, with a 30 rounds ammunition storage. It has an effective range of 24.5 kilometers, a gun elevation of +70°, depression of -3° and azimuth of ± 30°. In addition, the howitzer can fire Krasnopol laser-guided artillery rounds, which have a range between 20 and over 40 kilometers. The 32-ton Malva can cover a distance of 1,000 kilometers on public roads without refueling thanks to its all-wheel drive and a powerful diesel engine. It is also more maneuverable than self-propelled tracked howitzers, features greater technical potential and is less costly in operation. Russian state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec delivered the first batch of Malva howitzers to the Russian military in October of 2023. The conglomerate, which produces the howitzers, said in July of last year that another batch was delivered. Also in July, Rostech revealed that the armored cabin of the Malva withstood a hit by a rocket of the United States-made M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket system in the special military operation zone. - — U.S. Moved More Nuclear-Capable Stealth Bombers Within Striking Range From Iran
- The B-2 flies over the Utah Testing and Training Range at Hill Air Force Base, Utah (Photo by Bobbie Garcia) The number of B-2 Spirit strategic stealth bombers deployed by the United States at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean has risen to six, the Associated Press reported on April 3, citing recent satellite images of the key air base from Planet Labs PBC. The deployment of the nuclear-capable bombers in the Middle East comes as the U.S. continues a large-scale aerial campaign targeting the Houthis (Ansar Allah). Bombers of this type have been used in combat to target in the past. Overnight, more than 35 U.S. strikes hit Houthi-controlled areas, with Yemeni media reporting the death of at least two people. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have also been on the rise since Tehran rejected a proposal by President Donlad Trump to launch direct talks on its rapidly advancing nuclear program. The B-2, which features low-observable stealth technology, was especially designed to penetrate dense air defense networks. The bomber can also deploy the BU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a 14-ton precision-guided bunker buster bomb that can penetrate over 60 meters of fortifications. Due to these capabilities, the bomber is expected to play a key role in any U.S. attack on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, like the Natanz uranium enrichment site. The U.S. built 21 B-2s, each costing between $1-2 billions. One was destroyed in a crash in 2008 and another was retired after being damaged in a 2022 crash. Not all of the remaining 19 are available for combat at any given moment. In addition to the bombers, the U.S. reinforced its military posture in the Middle East in recent weeks with a second aircraft carrier, fighter jets, combat drones and anti-missile-capable air defense systems. While significantly increasing U.S. forces in the Middle East in case Trump chooses to attack Iran, the White House was seriously considering a new proposal by Iran for indirect nuclear talks, according to a recent report by the Axios news website. Still, many allies of the U.S. appear to be bracing for a worst case scenario. According to the Middle East Eye, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait have all told the U.S. that they will not permit their airspaces or territories to be used as a launchpad against Iran, including for refueling and rescue operations. France’s foreign minister also warned that if a new agreement was not reached with Iran over its nuclear program, then a military confrontation seemed “almost inevitable.” Speaking after French President Emmanuel Macron convened a rare and undisclosed meeting of key ministers and experts on March 2 to discuss tension with Iran, Jean-Noel Barrot appeared to ramp up the pressure on Tehran. “The window of opportunity is narrow. We only have a few months until the expiration of this [2015] accord. In case of failure, a military confrontation would seem to be almost inevitable,” Barrot told a parliamentary hearing. Meanwhile, the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has more openly expressed its desire for the U.S. to join it in an attack against Iran. According to a report by the Washington Post from February, U.S. intelligence had estimated that such an attack was likely during the first half of this year. Russia said on April 3 said that threats of a U.S. attack on Iran were unacceptable and warned that attacking the Islamic Republic could lead to potentially catastrophic results if nuclear installations were bombed. Asked about Irans nuclear programme and the dangers in the current situation, Russias foreign ministry said that Moscow was committed to finding solutions to Irans nuclear programme which respected Tehrans rights to peaceful nuclear energy. The use of military force by Irans opponents in the context of the settlement is illegal and unacceptable, Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the ministry, told reporters. Threats from outside to bomb Irans nuclear infrastructure facilities will inevitably lead to an irreversible global catastrophe. These threats are simply unacceptable. While Trump appears to be open to talks with Iran, Israel’s enthusiasm for a military solution could drag the U.S. into a regional conflict with far reaching consequences. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - — Israeli Drones Attack Medical Center, Vehicle In Southern Lebanon (Videos)
- Illustrative image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) Israel carried out more strikes on southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, on April 3 causing material losses and damage. Early in the morning, Israeli drones attacked with at least three munitions a newly established center of the Islamic Health Authority, a Lebanese Civil Defense organization affiliated with Hezbollah, close to the key coastal town of Naqoura. The attack completely destroyed the center and damaged two ambulances as well as a fire truck, the organization said in a statement, adding that “this aggression is part of a series of daily violations and attacks, as the Israeli enemy continues its criminal activities that began in its last war on Lebanon. Another Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle near the town of Bint Jbeil later in the morning, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting that two people were wounded. Click to see full-size image. Via X. Hezbollah began launching attacks against Israel on October 8 of 2023, in support of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, which had launched a surprise attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel just a day earlier. After taking heavy losses, the group agreed to a ceasefire last November. The ceasefire, which was brokered by the United States, was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the Israeli military continued to launch strikes against Hezbollah. It also deployed troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon. Israel escalated in recent weeks, launching two strikes against targets of Hezbollah in the capital, Beirut, on March 27 and April 1 in response to rocket attacks which the group denied responsibility for. Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned in a speech after the first strike that if Israel continues to carry out strikes in Lebanon then the group will take matters into its own hands. However, Israel escalated again by killing Hassan Bdair, a senior intelligence commander of the group, in the second strike. Evidently, Hezbollah is attempting to avoid another confrontation. Israel on the other hand appears to be pushing to end the ceasefire. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. In two separate statements, Houthi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said that the group shot down an MQ-9 Reaper combat drone, the second in less than 72 hours, over the western province of al-Hodeidah and attacked the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea. “The American enemy launched a blatant aggression against our country over the past few hours, with more than 36 strikes,” the spokesman said in the second statement. “In response to this aggression, the naval forces, unmanned aerial vehicles, and missile forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of God Almighty, carried out a special and joint military operation. They engaged the U.S. aircraft carrier Truman and its associated warships in the northern Red Sea using a number of cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles,” he added, noting that “the operation successfully achieved its objectives.” As usual, Brig. Gen. Saree stressed in both statements that the Houthis will continue to launch attacks against Israel and affiliated shipping until a ceasefire is reached in the Gaza Strip and aid is delivered to Palestinian people there. The Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that U.S. strikes killed a man in the area of al-Salif in al-Hodeidah. It also reported more than 20 other strikes on the northern province of Sadaa, the heartland of the Houthis, with several targeting a military camp in the area of Kahlan. The news channel also reported a strike on a vehicle near the capital, Sanaa, and said that other strikes targeted a communication center in the central province of Ibb, killing at least one man. (Al-Masirah) The U.S. Central Command resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donald Trump, who said that the large-scale operation was launched in response to the group’s renewed attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. Since then, at least 67 people, including commanders of the Houthis and civilians, have been killed. The command has not yet commented on the recent deadly strikes on Yemen, nor on the attacks announced by the Houthis. Despite the lack of any clear results, the U.S. appears to be committed to the ongoing operation against the Houthis. In fact, Washington could escalate even further if the group continues to refuse to cease their attacks before the Israeli war on Gaza is over. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. - Illustrative image. (The Israeli Defense Forces) Over a dozen people were killed in central and southern Syria overnight when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) unleashed an intense wave of strikes against military sites and clashed with local fighters. The strikes, which began late on April 2, targeted “remaining military capabilities” at the Hama military airport in the western Hama countryside and the T-4 Air Base in the eastern Homs countryside, according to the IDF, which said in a statement that runways, fuel depots, and radars at the two sites were hit. The IDF added that the strikes also targeted “military infrastructure” close to the Syrian capital, Damascus, without elaborating. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed that the Barzeh scientific research center, located just outside the capital, was hit by multiple strikes. Some 18 strikes also targeted Hama military airport and three others targeted the T4, according to the London-based monitoring group. Videos posted to social networks showed large blasts at the targeted sites. Photos from Hama also revealed that several fighter jets were destroyed. Click to see full-size image. Via Telegram. The strikes came following reports of Turkish plans to deploy troops at military sites in central Syria. One particular report by the Middle East Eye said that Ankara was preparing to deploy air defenses and combat drones at the T4 and the nearby Palmyra military airport, which were both targeted twice by the IDF last month. According to the SOHR, at least four people were killed in Hama as a result of the strikes. Syrian activists alleged that three Turkish engineers were among the casualties. However, these claims are yet to be verified. Amid the strikes, a large force from the IDF advanced from the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights towards the town of Nawa in the western Daraa countryside. Israeli troops had occupied the buffer zone just hours after the fall of the Assad regime last December as a part of a large-scale operation that also saw the destruction of most of the combat capabilities left behind by the former Syrian military by some 500 strikes. The advance towards Nawa triggered calls for “Jihad,” with dozens of locals taking up arms and attempting to stop Israeli troops close to the nearby town of Tasil. The IDF confirmed in a statement released on April 3 morning that local fighters opened fire on Israeli troops operating near Tasil, as they were working to “confiscate weapons and destroy terror infrastructure.” The troops, of the 474th Golan Regional Brigade, returned fire and “eliminated” several gunmen “on the ground and from the air,” the military said, adding that no soldiers were injured in the exchange, and the operation in the area was completed. The state-run Syrian Arab News agency later said that nine people were killed in Israeli strikes that targeted the area of Harsh Sad al-Jubailiya between Nawa and Tasil, describing the incident as a “massacre.” This was the second incident in which IDF troops operating in southern Syria have come under fire since taking over the bufferzone. The deadly strikes and clashes drew only condemnations from the Syrian interim government, which called the events a “flagrant violation” of the country’s sovereignty. “In a blatant violation of international law and Syrian sovereignty, Israeli forces launched airstrikes on five locations across the country,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “This unjustified escalation is a deliberate attempt to destabilize Syria and exacerbate the suffering of its people,” it added. The ministry also acknowledged that the Israeli attack resulted in the “near-total destruction” of Hama military airport, noting that the strikes came as the country is trying to rebuild after 14 years of war and calling it a strategy to “normalize violence within the country.” From its side, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the strikes on Syria were intended to serve as “a warning for the future.” “Israel will not allow Syria to become a threat to its communities and security interests,” said Katz. “If you allow forces hostile to Israel to enter Syria and endanger Israel’s security interests, you will pay a heavy price,” the minister added, addressing Syria’s interim president Ahmed Al-Sharaa by his nom de guerre, Abu Mohammad al-Joulani. “The Air Force’s operations yesterday against the T-4 and Hama airports and in the Damascus area are a clear message and a warning for the future: We will not allow the State of Israel’s security to be harmed,” he concluded. Overall, the deadly strikes were without a doubt meant as a threat to Turkey. Israel appears to be determined to prevent the emergence of a strategic Turkish-Syrian alliance. Any attempt by Ankara to challenge Israel could result in a dangeoruse confrontation, with Damascus ultimately paying the price. While Turkey had much success before in advancing its interests in Syria, Libya and Iraq, it has never faced any challenge as serious as the once currently posed by Israel. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org. After a quite calm night on April 1st, Russia and Ukraine resumed massive strikes on each other’s rear regions. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in total, 93 Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed and intercepted in three Russian regions on the night of April 2nd. The massive attack resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure, but no strikes on any military facilities have been confirmed so far. Most of them targeted the Kursk region, where the last Ukrainian forces are being repelled from the border areas. The region was attacked by 87 Ukrainian drones. As a result of the strikes, two apartment buildings in the center of Kursk city were damaged. More civilian buildings were attacked in the southern Rostov region. The local city of Taganrog was attacked by three Ukrainian drones. One of them hovered in trees, another fell on garages, and the third hit an apartment building. Fortunately, the night attack resulted in no civilian victims. In the morning, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine released new footage of drone strikes in Crimea. They were reportedly launched by the special unit called Prymary. The targets included two BK-16 airborne assault boats, one Raptor patrol boat and Thor air defense system. However, another Ukrainian media victory was well exaggerated. The local sources claimed that none of the targets suffered any significant damage, the drones slightly missed them and struck the areas nearby, which is also confirmed by the Ukrainian footage. On the other hand, the Russian military continues highly concentrated devastating strikes on targets throughout Ukraine. The joint launch of dozens of Geranium UAVs increases the chance of overcoming Ukrainian air defense. Last night, about 15 kamikaze drones struck the industrial zone in the city of Kharkiv. The workshops of the Promsvyaz industrial enterprise were heavily damaged. The post city of Odessa also came under another massive wave of strikes. Amid the stalling negotiations mediated by Washington, as well as stabilization of the front line and the absence of large-scale operations, the Russian military got time to scale up the arsenal of weapons necessary for future tasks, to accumulate cruise missiles and Geran drones without operational haste. While Kiev remains extremely dependent on external supplies, the Russian military has its reserves replenished to assure the further high—density strikes. They are able to respond to any escalation and thwart Ukrainian attempts of large-scale offensives. According to various estimations, Russias accumulation of drones and missiles may become the game changing factor and is already swinging the pendulum of war in its favor. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence NOW hosted at southfront.press Previously, SouthFront: Analysis and Intelligence was at southfront.org.
